What is a Chessie?

The Official American Kennel Club description of the breed is 

“Equally proficient on land and in the water, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed along the Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under the most adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during the course of many strenuous multiple retrieves. Frequently the Chesapeake must face wind, tide and long cold swims in its work.” 

 

The Chessie was recognized by the AKC in 1878 as one of the original AKC Sporting Breeds.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, often affectionately called a “Chessie,” is a breed steeped in history and renowned for its exceptional hunting abilities and rugged demeanor. Originating in the harsh conditions of the Chesapeake Bay region, these dogs were bred to be hardy, intelligent, and tireless retrievers.  

 
 

A History Steeped in Survival

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s story begins in 1807 when two Newfoundland puppies were rescued from a shipwreck off the coast of Maryland. These dogs, with their thick, oily coats and natural swimming ability, proved to be invaluable assets to local waterfowl hunters. Over time, they were bred with other retriever-type dogs, resulting in a breed uniquely adapted to the cold, harsh waters of the Chesapeake Bay.  

 
 

A Rugged and Versatile Breed

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are medium to large-sized dogs with a distinctive appearance. Their thick, dense coat, often described as “oily,” provides excellent insulation and water repellency. Their coloration varies from a rich brown to a grizzled gray, blending seamlessly with the marshy landscapes they were bred to work in.  

 
 

Beyond their impressive physical attributes, Chessies possess a strong work ethic and intelligence. They are known for their exceptional retrieving abilities, both on land and in water. Their keen sense of smell and sharp eyesight make them adept at locating and retrieving waterfowl, even in challenging conditions.

While Chessies are primarily working dogs, they also make wonderful family pets. They are loyal, affectionate, and protective of their loved ones. However, it’s important to note that they require a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation to thrive. Daily walks, swims, and opportunities to engage in activities like retrieving or agility training are essential for their well-being. 

 
 

Training the Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are intelligent dogs, but they can also be independent and may challenge  your training skills and experience.  Early socialization and positive reinforcement training are crucial to shape their behavior and build a strong bond with their owners. Patience, consistency, and firm but gentle training methods are key to success.  Harsh training methods will backfire with this breed.
